Changing careers at 10 years into a job, is it realistic? (update)

I want to move from electrician's helper to something with more stability. I have a little time and a small budget for training.

I took a small pay cut for a year, and it was worth it for the growth afterwards.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
