Career change after a layoff, where to begin? - what worked for you?

I want to move from payroll clerk to something with more stability. I have good customer skills and I am comfortable with spreadsheets. Has anyone made a similar move?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
