Career change after a layoff, where to begin? - what worked for you?

My layoff made me rethink whether to stay in my field. It has been a long 17 weeks. My family is supportive but nervous. Has anyone made a similar move?

Try a small project in the new field before committing. It told me a lot about whether I would enjoy it.
