Career change after a layoff, where to begin? - what worked for you?

After 8 years as a forklift operator I am thinking about moving into a different field. I am in Minneapolis, in case local advice matters. I have good customer skills and I am comfortable with spreadsheets. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
