Career change after a layoff, where to begin? (update)

After 14 years as a nurse's aide I am thinking about moving into a different field. Thank you in advance. I have a little time and a small budget for training. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

Try a small project in the new field before committing. It told me a lot about whether I would enjoy it.
