Career change after a layoff, where to begin? (update)

I want to move from graphic designer to something with more stability. I do not usually post, so bear with me. I have a little time and a small budget for training. Has anyone made a similar move?

I began with informational chats, then a short online course, then a related entry-level role. It took about 10 months.

Try a small project in the new field before committing. It told me a lot about whether I would enjoy it.
