Career change after a layoff, where to begin? - any advice?

My layoff made me rethink whether to stay in my field. I am in Wichita, in case local advice matters. I have a little time and a small budget for training. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 4 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
