Career change after a layoff, where to begin? - any advice?

I want to move from customer-service rep to something with more stability. I have been trying to stay organised about it. I have good customer skills and I am comfortable with spreadsheets. Has anyone made a similar move?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 7 months ago, and it settled down once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
