Career change after a layoff, where to begin? after 4 years as a school bus driver

I want to move from school bus driver to something with more stability. I am in St. Louis, in case local advice matters. My family is supportive but nervous. Has anyone made a similar move?

Try a small project in the new field before committing. It told me a lot about whether I would enjoy it.
