Career change after a layoff, where to begin? after 12 years as a forklift operator

After 12 years as a forklift operator I am thinking about moving into a different field. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. My family is supportive but nervous. How did you start?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
