Are certifications worth it while job hunting? - what worked for you?

I saw that many postings ask for a specific certification. I have read a lot of threads here and could not find my exact situation. I would like to use funding if possible. Is there free funding?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
