Are certifications worth it while job hunting? - what worked for you?

I am considering a short certificate to improve my chances as a barista. There are 8 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I am unsure whether employers value it. Did a certificate help you get hired?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
