Are certifications worth it while job hunting? - what worked for you?

I am considering a short certificate to improve my chances as a forklift operator. There are 18 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I am unsure whether employers value it. Did a certificate help you get hired?

Check a dozen job postings first. If most ask for the same certificate, it is probably worth it.
