Are certifications worth it while job hunting? (update)

I saw that many postings ask for a specific certification. I am in Birmingham, in case local advice matters. I am unsure whether employers value it. Did a certificate help you get hired?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
