Are certifications worth it while job hunting? (update)

I am considering a short certificate to improve my chances as an administrative assistant. This is my first time dealing with any of this. I can study evenings. Did a certificate help you get hired?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It saved me later.
