Are certifications worth it while job hunting? (Phoenix)

I saw that many postings ask for a specific certification. I am in Phoenix, in case local advice matters. I can study evenings. Did a certificate help you get hired?

Check a dozen job postings first. If most ask for the same certificate, it is probably worth it.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
