Are certifications worth it while job hunting?

I am considering a short certificate to improve my chances as a teaching assistant. I am in Wichita, in case local advice matters. I am unsure whether employers value it. Did a certificate help you get hired?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
