Are certifications worth it while job hunting? - any advice?

A local college offers a course that costs $250. Any experience at all would help. I can study evenings. Did a certificate help you get hired?

A hands-on course with a project helped more than a purely online one.

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
