Are certifications worth it while job hunting? after 17 years as a line cook

I saw that many postings ask for a specific certification. I have been trying to stay organised about it. I am unsure whether employers value it. Did a certificate help you get hired?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
