Are certifications worth it while job hunting? after 16 years as a line cook

I saw that many postings ask for a specific certification. I have been trying to stay organised about it. I would like to use funding if possible. Is there free funding?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
