Are certifications worth it while job hunting?

I saw that many postings ask for a specific certification. I am in Minneapolis, in case local advice matters. I would like to use funding if possible. Did a certificate help you get hired?

The workforce centre told me about training funds I qualified for. It covered most of my course.
