Are certifications worth it while job hunting? - 3 months and counting

I saw that many postings ask for a specific certification. It has been weighing on me all week. I am unsure whether employers value it. Did a certificate help you get hired?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it last year, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
