10-month résumé gap, advice? after 11 years as a barista

I have been out of work for 10 months and worry about the gap. There are 11 people counting on me, so I am trying to be careful. I have done some volunteering and a course during that time. What do you say in interviews?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
