Severance and unemployment, do they overlap? - what worked for you?

I was offered severance of 12 weeks after being let go as a web developer and I am unsure how it affects benefits. I worked as a web developer before this. The agreement mentions a release and a payment schedule.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
