Severance and unemployment, do they overlap? - any advice?

I was offered severance of 17 weeks after being let go as an electrician's helper and I am unsure how it affects benefits. Thank you in advance. I have a mortgage and need to plan. Did you file straight away?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.

I filed on day one anyway and reported the severance honestly. The agency decided what to do about the timing.
