Severance and unemployment, do they overlap? - any advice?

I was offered severance of 17 weeks after being let go as an administrative assistant and I am unsure how it affects benefits. It has been a long 26 weeks. I have a mortgage and need to plan. Did you file straight away?

Some states only count certain kinds of severance. A local workforce centre could tell me which.
