Severance and unemployment, do they overlap? after 7 years as a machine operator

I was offered severance of 7 weeks after being let go as a machine operator and I am unsure how it affects benefits. I am in Knoxville, in case local advice matters. I also wonder about the job-search requirement. How did your state treat it?
