Severance and unemployment, do they overlap? after 5 years as a machine operator

I was offered severance of 5 weeks after being let go as a machine operator and I am unsure how it affects benefits. I worked as a machine operator before this. I also wonder about the job-search requirement. Who should I ask before signing?
