Is COBRA worth it after a layoff? - 8 months and counting

I just got my COBRA paperwork and the deadline to decide is close. I am in Dallas, in case local advice matters. My old employer will not help with the premium. Did anyone switch mid-year?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
