Is COBRA worth it after a layoff?

The COBRA quote for my family is $500 a month and I do not know how to afford it. It has been a long 20 weeks. My spouse has a chronic condition, so dropping coverage feels risky. Did anyone switch mid-year?

A quick call to the plan's member line cleared up two things for us that the letter did not.

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
