ID verification problems, anyone solved this? (update)

I do not have a current driver's licence and they want one. Thank you in advance. The in-person office has long lines. Do I need an appointment?

Thanks for writing this out. I went through something close to it 3 months ago, and it got easier once I kept a simple log of every call and form.
