Got severance, how does it affect benefits? - what worked for you?

I was offered severance of 16 weeks after being let go as a teaching assistant and I am unsure how it affects benefits. This is my first time dealing with any of this. The agreement mentions a release and a payment schedule. How did your state treat it?
