Does severance delay my unemployment claim? after 6 years as a payroll clerk

I was offered severance of 6 weeks after being let go as a payroll clerk and I am unsure how it affects benefits. Any experience at all would help. I have a mortgage and need to plan. Who should I ask before signing?
