COBRA quote is huge, any alternatives? - what worked for you?

The COBRA quote for my family is $650 a month and I do not know how to afford it. I do not usually post, so bear with me. My old employer will not help with the premium. Is the decision time really that tight?

Keep everything in writing and save the confirmation numbers. It made the follow-up calls so much easier.
