File today

Every date here counts from the week you file, so file as soon as you're out of work, and keep certifying every week while you wait.

Statewide history, not a promise. Identity checks, a question about why you left your job, or missed weekly certifications push a claim into the slow tail, so keep certifying every week while you wait. Days are counted from the end of your first payable week (20 CFR 640.5). Some states end weeks on Sunday, so dates can be a day off.

Puerto Rico first payment questions

How long does Puerto Rico take to pay the first unemployment check?
In the 12 months to May 2026, Puerto Rico made 84.3% of its first payments within 21 days of the end of the claimant's first payable week and 76.8% within 14 days. Half were made within 7 days, and 4.1% took more than 70 days. The clock starts when your first payable week ends. That's usually the Saturday of the week you file, or a week later with an unpaid waiting week.
Why is my first payment taking longer than this?
These are statewide figures. A claim is held while the state verifies your identity or decides an eligibility question: most often why you left your last job, wages that don't match employer records, or a missed weekly certification. Answer every request quickly and keep certifying each week; weeks you certify while a claim is pending are generally paid together if it is approved.
Does a waiting week delay my first check?
Yes, by a week: the waiting week is unpaid, so your first payable week ends seven days later. The federal standard counts from the end of the first payable week: 87% within 14 days in waiting-week states, 21 days in states without one (20 CFR 640.5). If you're not sure about Puerto Rico, this page shows both timelines; the claimant handbook on Puerto Rico's official unemployment portal says whether a waiting week applies.
